Dates for 2009 Topper Squad Training are:

  • Sunday 29th March (selection day)
  • Sunday 26th April
  • Sunday 24th May
  • Sunday 14th June
  • Sunday 19th July
  • Sunday 26th July

There is also an opportunity to attend the NE Travellers Circuit (more details when we have dates) and the Sunderland Open (Sat/Sun 15/16th August and potentially the RYA North Zone Squad Championships on Sat/Sun 26/27 September. It would be worth noting these dates in your diaries.

We intend to charge a nominal fee of £2 per session for coaching to cover costs of fuel, contribution to insurance etc.

Youth Sailors. New for 2009. the KWSC TOPPER SQUAD!. Do you want to have fun on the water? Are you interested in racing? Do you enjoy sailing but would like to increase your skill? If the answer to any of these questions is yes then TOPPER SQUAD may be for you.

TOPPER SQUAD is an opportunity for KWSC youth sailors to train and work towards becoming the best of the best in youth sailing. You will be given race training by our club's new RYA Race Coaches in morning sessions, and then time to perfect your skills racing in the club's 'Topper Series', on TOPPER SQUAD days. Emphasis will be placed on how to have FUN while racing, as well as developing boat handling and tactical skills. We will try to build racing skill and confidence with the aim of getting more of our Kielder youths onto the RYA 'Pathway' and beyond (2016 Olympics maybe?)!

How do I become a member of the TOPPER SQUAD?

There will initially be 6 places available in the TOPPER SQUAD, and members will be chosen by the race coaches from young sailors who attend the squad selection day on March 29th 2009.

Youth sailors are invited to attend this day and try out for the TOPPER SQUAD. Priority will initially be given to those under 15 (as this aligns with the RYA Topper Scheme but others will be considered and if numbers allow can be in a second squad so don't let this put you off applying). On the day you will be asked to demonstrate that you can.

  • Enjoy sailing!
  • Sail a triangular course unaided in a Topper dinghy.
  • Be able to right a Topper from a capsize.
  • Want to improve your racing skills.

So you need to make sure you are confident doing these things before you come.

As well as this, to become a member of the TOPPER SQUAD you will need to agree to attend all TOPPER SQUAD coaching sessions, take part in the Topper race series and have the support of you parent/guardian in doing so.

ALL COACHING WILL TAKE PLACE IN CLUB BOATS, SO DON'T WORRRY YOU DON'T NEED YOUR OWN TOPPER.

What happens if I don't get selected?

Our race coaches will spend time explaining what you need to work on so that you can try again next time. We will also try to arrange some extra coaching if we can in order to help you.
