Concrete Foreshore

Following long standing discussions in Committee and with members at the AGM we are in the process of building the next part of the concrete foreshore to improve dinghy access to the water and occasional parking.  Quotations for the work have been obtained and used to select a builder to undertake the work to Northumbrian Water's specifications.

We are hostage to builder's busy summer schedules but anticipate that during this year we will see the expansion of the concreted area replacing some the rough stone foreshore.  Over three years we expect the whole of the shore frontage to be concreted in this fashion giving members much better access to the water and better facilities all round.

Update on the Boat Park

I am happy to say that the club is growing fast at the moment, as many of you will have been aware by looking at the boat park! June and we have almost run out of room! We have a potential problem developing with a lack of current boat park space.

However, plans are afoot to develop the new land to the west to create a new area and expand the existing boat park. We intend to gain a row on the high land for low boats such as lasers. We then intend to take down the fence and push back the Flying Fifteen row by two metres so that their wheels are still on tarmac but the sterns overhang a hogged area. We can then move the centre double  row of dinghies to the west and use the row opposite the FFs for catamarans, which need a wide aisle to manoeuvre in. We can then create a new row for boats, horizontal to the slope.

All this is going to affect everyone of us so I am writing to keep everyone up to date. First there will be a period of disruption, then we will be reallocated boat park spaces according to the new layout, which is being carefully planned according to boats length and widths so that we make best use of our space.

The period of disruption will cover at least two weekends, depending on the level of support. We will try to run the racing over the affected weekends

First we will need a working party to prepare for the contractors; to take down the fence and move the entire row of Flying Fifteens towards the centre section, then mark off the areas which will be reserved for the work.  Then the contractors will move in with heavy machinery. A 2m strip will be leveled for the Flying Fifteens to hang over, then the top of the land flattened for a new row of boats. A wide path will be made down to the shore, where the land will be built up to create a new trailer park. Boulders will be moved from inland to create a bit of a wave erosion barrier along our shoreline.  Hogging will be laid. This should be done in a week.

Once the heavy machinery leaves we will need at least one more working party to move the Flying Fifteen row to it’s new position, reposition the middle row and create a new row. All supports will have to be repositioned, tarmac repaired and lines painted. There will also be the tidying up of the new land.

If you have any problems with your boat being moved in your absence, try and make it to the working parties, or if you really cannot, then arrange to take it offsite yourself for the duration.

We are still waiting for a date from the contractors but expect to be given a week, hopefully in July, maybe in August.  This note is to give advance warning and I will write again to ask for help once we know the dates. We will need a high level of support to manage transition or it will take much longer to end the disruption. Anyone with experience of such a project will be particularly welcome.

If you are not using your boat at all we would be grateful if you could take it off site and leave the space for an active member. Many thanks.
