Junior Camp Weekend 30th-31st July

Please note that due to the necessity for a working party to support our land expansion this camp has been postponed.  IT WILL NOW TAKE PLACE AT THE WEEKEND OF THE REGATTA ON SUNDAY 28th AUGUST, please look out for further details.

Hopefully you will have been wondering what this is. Well, it is my first action as Commodore, to create a time when families can sail and socialise together, make new friends and get the best out the sailing club.

The aim of the weekend is to have as many of the family members as possible at the club for a series of joint activities, both on the water and on land. Most of the junior training sessions will have been held so it also a chance for juniors to use their new skills with their new friends. There will be a range of activities to attract all levels and ages.

The type of events we hope to offer will vary, both during the day and the evening.

Day activities suggestions:

  • Picnic expeditions in bigger boats – aimed at children too young or inexperienced to sail on their own;
  • Orienteering on the water – aimed at groups with limited skills;
  • Racing – aimed at the more advanced, divided into ages and maybe classes;
  • Games on the water – for all;
  • Parent event – for children to support their parents;
  • Clubhouse activities – for wet weather;
  • Swimming and sauna at Leaplish – for wet weather;
  • Treasure Hunt –for wet weather;

And in the evening:

  • Treasure Hunt – for good weather;
  • Quiz;
  • Barbecue;

We hope people will camp, bring caravans, rent a Leaplish Lodge for the week or use the bunkhouses so as to get the best out of the Saturday evening.

The weekend will only be possible with strong parental involvement, both in the planning beforehand and running the weekend itself. As you know, we have no staff. We can only  make things happen ourselves.

First we need a team to do the planning and running of the weekend.

I already have the assistance of Andrew Plasom Scott and Paul Turnbull but we need another 2 or 3 volunteers to get things set up, maybe more feminine input? We will need to decide on the events, organise the timetables and volunteers, get everything organised.

On the weekend itself we will have certain requirements:

  • At least one parent of each attending family must be involved for a period with the running the event as patrol, galley, games organiser, etc;
  • A parent must always be on site; children cannot be left for the weekend on their own;
  • Families will have to register as coming so we can know numbers of children, boats, people with Power Boat Level 2, tents, food and prizes required, etc;

If you think this will be of interest to you and your family, first mark it in your diary, then email me and when we know more we can contact you direct. We will be sending entry forms and information to all those who put ‘interested in helping at family events’ on the duty questionnaire. Better still, offer your services and ideas on what we should do.
