We are very fortunate to be able to sail on Kielder at any time of the daylight hours at any time of the year without Patrol Boat cover. A recent review of all water sports activities by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for Northumberland Water has resulted in some new procedures we must follow from now on.
If you are involved in a training course or in normal club racing or in an Open meeting these rules are covered by our normal race procedures.
All other members going on the water must sign on and off the water. Mike Collins has installed a drywipe board, with pen attached, on the front door for this purpose. Before sailing you only need on it the date, your names, the boat and number and your vehicle registration number. Enter anything else that might be useful like 'parked in the lower car park' or 'returning late'. After you have finished sailing please remove your details from the board. This procedure needs to be followed by parents on behalf of children sailing and windsurfers as well.
This procedure is designed to assist the emergency services and Northumbrian Water should there be some form of incident on the water which requires all water users to be accounted for. It is a simple and not too obtrusive procedure - please try to remember to follow it.
If the security men see that a vehicle is still around and that someone is still out on the water they will be able to raise an alarm if needed, knowing how many people are involved and in what boat.
If you are racing, signing on at the race office, and from this year, signing a declaration at the end of the race, does the same thing.
