(Article from June 2005)
As part of the ongoing tidy up and management of the club boat park, premises and equipment the early season saw three important working parties to place a large shed behind the club house to house all the equipment for club boats (Oppies, Toppers, Fevas, Comets, Wayfarers). I am extremely grateful to those members who gave of their time, effort, encouragement and materials to help make this happen and to establish this important asset to help us manage our equipment in an organised manner. In particular I take my cap off to Gary Scott who spent the best part of a very long day unselfishly helping with the shed construction despite the fact that he and his family were about to move to Harris and would not benefit from the new facility.
The idea for the shed had germinated over a year ago but only got going in anger at the first working party of the club year when a few willing members helped me cut turf and lay a base and frame for the shed. This spurred the remainder of the plan into action and a short time later, one fine Saturday morning a few of us dismantled the existing shed from my garden and with the generous use of William Pym's very substantial road trailer transported it to KWSC that same day. (We would have been a bit stuck without the trailer as the shed is pretty big - we had to cut two of the sides in half to transport it.)
The Sunday saw the shed erected and repaired during a very long day and a new roof built. We didn't manage to felt the roof that same day and inclement weather delayed this activity from completion for a few weeks. Once a few coats of stain had been applied the shed looked good as new.
Over the last few months the shed has gradually become equipped internally and gets more organised every week. This process nears completion with the installation of racks for sails and Oppie spars. Please note that this facility (like the garage) is NOT for the storage of member's equipment.
You will find safety helmets, club buoyancy aids, rudders, dagger boards, Oppie sails and spars and Feva sails, all arranged in the shed. Access to the club is available to all members at any time. A key resides near to the club phone (please replace after use). All I ask is that you put anything back neat and tidy and please report any damage or missing equipment - and most importantly please ensure the shed is locked again after use. Be careful with the door in strong winds and please could children be supervised at all times.
There are too many people to thank them by listing (for fear I should accidentally omit anyone) but to all of you who helped in any way whatever my thanks once again for the hard work, humour and for putting up with my sometimes authoritarian leadership.
