The new season at Kielder has got off to a great start this year with the main event being the very successful Flying Fifteen Northern Championships which saw a very large turnout from places as far apart as Ireland, Hayling Island and various clubs in Scotland. Well done to Giles Passmore for his successful organisation of this event and to the work he put in to attract a record number of boats to the club. Many thanks indeed to those members who provided much valued logistics support in race management, galley, beach or general assistance. Without you all the event would not have gone so smoothly.
The club received very many favourable comments as a result of this event and has helped build its reputation further. A more detailed report can be found on the (old ref. removed) as well as the articles in this Newsletter.
Training has got off to an excellent start with an over subscribed Young Sailors Course once again this year. We can only apologise to those unable to get on the course but we are unfortunately limited by the number of trained Instructors available to us. This is something we are actively progressing and the beginning of the year saw a new set of members begin the road to Instruction by attending am Assistant Instructor's Course at Kielder - as reported in the last newsletter.
April/May saw some activity with the EGM. The committee received approval to make some minor but important changes to the Constitution (which now appear in your Year Book) and to investigate a major update of that Constitution (which is now over 21 years old). In addition approval was received from the membership to proceed with some further foreshore concreting work. However, the membership also expressed the wish to further develop the training and approved spending of club funds on additional Toppers for young sailors training and member' use. When you now visit the club you will see we now have a total of 6 Toppers racked at the side of the club house. This continues our drive to encourage and develop our Young Sailors and thus build the future of the club.
The new inflatable safety boat and engine has been purchased and ably commissioned by the ever hard working Mike Collins. It was put to good use immediately in supporting the first day of the Young Sailors training.
Two of our younger sailors entered the Youth Nationals for the first time sailing Laser Radials. Well done to Francis Scott and Fergus Holland.
Several boats attended Coniston Sailing Club's Open Meeting in the late May Bank Holiday - Four Ospreys, an RS200, an ISO and a Comet Zero. On the third day three other members turned up for a day out and took a fun sail on the water. The weather was superb and the club Ospreys were very successful with first and second place being secured by Rob Shaw & son and Ian Little/Alec Mamwell respectively. Your Editor did not do quite as well but met his objectives and did not come last! There is a report on this event in the newsletter.
May also saw the attendance of several skilled Windsurfers at their annual visit to Kielder. Unusually, in recent years, they actually managed to benefit from some wind on the second day.
Mid June saw your editor and Giles Passmore gain some considerable success in the Flying Fifteen Scottish National Championships at Loch Ard.
By the time you receive the next newsletter Kielder's annual Open Meeting will be upon us and its organisation becomes the focus of the Committee's efforts over the next few months. If you would like to volunteer to help with this event please contact Viola Scott or Steve Gibbon. If you are not helping then hopefully you will be sailing in the event! You can read about this in a short request for assistance.
