Steve and Giles at the Scottish Nationals

Well having taken the plunge and sailed in the Northerns at Kielder I decided to take up Giles Passmore's kind offer of a crew placement in his FF at the Scottish FF Nationals on 19/20th June at Loch Ard Sailing Club in the Trossachs.  I am really pleased I did!  Apart from having an excellent time at a small friendly club with wonderful scenery (sounds familiar) we sailed really well considering we had been in a boat together only twice before and my forte is asymmetric sailing, not these odd boats with traditional spinnakers.

We sailed four races (2 Saturday and 2 Sunday) in a fleet of 29 boats, 7 of which were silver/classic (older sail numbers and hence hull shapes).  We had four firsts (yes 1st, 1st, 1st and 1st) in the Silver fleet (of 5) and on corrected handicap for the different types of FF we gained an overall 8th, 22nd - doh our discard, 7th and 6th to finish in the fleet at a very creditable 8th overall (well there were national and world champions in the fleet!).

We came away with a case of Scottish beer, in my case a slight hangover from Saturday night, excellent memories of a good location, a friendly club, and some good food inside.  The only slight disappointment was that there were no specific trophies for the silver fleet (all five trophies belonging to the overall fleet).

There was a slightly unusual start to Saturday for some competitors in that the road to LASC passes through the town of Aberfoyle (pretty and generally quiet).  On the Saturday morning some competitors were held up as the police were busy dealing with an armed siege in the village.  This in a place where you would think nothing ever happens.

All in all a very stress free and enjoyable weekend with good company and lots of success.  Recommended!
