(Article from December 2003)
I have been a member of KWSC for eight seasons now, coming on from a virtual beginner to where I am today (not much better I hear some say!). I have gained a tremendous amount from KWSC particularly in recent years as a result of putting more back into the club myself. I have gained so much from active participation in the club at all levels whether it is racing, duties, training (giving and receiving), conversation (sailing and non-sailing related) or simply helping at the working parties at the beginning and end of the season. I have participated in club open meetings, as well as acted as race officer or simply helping hand. There is little I have not had a go at and enjoyed - yes even the Galley! The more I get involved the more I seem to enjoy it and the longer the winter breaks seem to be. My latest contribution is this newsletter.
Above all I have made friends and learned from others of all ages (from children to those not so young!). I continue to be envious of the many who can sail better than I, in some or all respects (which is most of you), and those who pick up the fundamentals of the sport much quicker than I managed. It is not too strong a statement to say that the experience of being part of KWSC has enriched my life.
I now embark upon the next step of the journey. Having being on the periphery of the Committee for a number of years by helping with the business plans or standing in for Dave Drewery as training representative, I am now a member of the Committee. Through doing this I hope I can not only influence the club to further its growth and build upon the very many aspects of Kielder which I so enjoy, but also say thanks to the club and the many members who have helped me achieve so much these last few years. I am indebted to so very many.
I hope you too get a lot from the club. I would encourage you all to go the extra mile next season and do a little more, turn up for that duty, offer help with an event, offer us help with training, participate in a few races or a few more than last time or something little you would be happy to be involved with - don't just sail and go home. I believe KWSC is on the verge of a healthy period thanks to good leadership and membership support, and with a little more effort we can become a very successful and prominent club where everyone would want to sail.
If you have any ideas or suggestions for the club why not raise them through myself or any other committee member or simply make them happen yourself if possible and this next year why not do that extra race, that duty or help at the Open - you would be welcome with open arms.
